Google Penguin real-time update
It has been over a year and 17 weeks since the last Google update. We continue to come across lots of bad links to many of our new customers. For example, we found links from Kim Kardashian sites, 2014 hairstyles for men, piles of directories and article submission sites in the back link profile of a high quality sales training website.
Our new client was dumbfounded when we showed her this and had no idea how they got there, except maybe from a virtual assistant she hired in the past.
These bad links are going to hold her content marketing back. We’re going to disavow them using Google’s tool but Google needs to refresh Penguin for it to properly help repair the damage.
John Mueller from Google recently gave a little bit of information about when Google Penguin would be launched. Basically he just says hopefully soon but it does seem like it would be bordering on ridiculous and may be a bit scandalous for it not to come out in the very near future…
It’s not fair to tell people that there is a way to repair penalties, supply a tool and not have it fully work despite saying it is going to be released soon for over a year.
His comments come at 23:37 into this video:
Page speed ranking factor to use mobile page speed for mobile sites is coming soon according to Google
Google is refining their mobile algorithms to do a better job at taking into account a websites mobile page speed when determining how well it should rank in mobile searchers.
If your website is not loading quickly and more than casually mobile friendly, it’s time to step up your game.

Facebook continues to be pay to play
31.68% of the total reach on Facebook in April is reported to be from paying to play.
SocialTimes says “social analytics and reporting firm Locowise found that 43.28 percent of the 5,000 Facebook pages it studied in April used Facebook advertising, which accounted for 31.68 percent of their total reach.”
They also found that organic Facebook posts only reach an average of 10.71% of the pages audience.
I was just in a meeting at Brandeis last night for the digital marketing master’s degree advisory committee and training people on paid social was a part of the discussion.

Funny, ha ha: Make my logo bigger cream
One of my subcontractors this week shared a couple of videos about clients wanting to make their logo bigger. Make the logo BIGGER! And Make my logo bigger cream.
The moral of the story is that you want your logo to be clear and easy to read including the tagline but especially for mobile devices it is important to keep it properly sized.
